Thick fog has settled over parts of North Georgia on Thursday morning as heavy rain is falling to the west.

A dense fog advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. for several counties along and south of I-20, including south Fulton, Henry and Clayton. The fog could make travel difficult as drivers take their time in the haze, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Visibility dropped to less than a quarter-mile at Hartsfield Jackson-International Airport early Thursday.

“At least were not throwing the rain on this yet,” Channel 2 meteorologist Monahan said. “That’s going to change later today.”

All the rain sitting to the west will eventually make its way into North Georgia, he said, dragged along by a cold front.

“That’s going to increase our rain chances and give us the chance for a few storms around metro Atlanta,” he said.

The mountains should be the first to get wet. Rain chances are expected to rise inside the Perimeter around midday, but the bulk of the rain should be timed with the evening commute, according to Monahan.

He expects very little rain activity through 9 a.m.

“I think a lot of the morning drive will be nice and dry,” he said. “But by lunchtime, rain chances are coming up. Through the evening drive, it is going to be kind of messy around here.”

The rain will clear out by late Thursday, according to Channel 2. It’s only the beginning of a wet weather pattern for North Georgia.

Every day in Channel 2′s five-day forecast features a chance of rain.

“The rain really adds up between now and Sunday,” Monahan said. “With this first round of rain, this is through Friday night, there’s the chance for an inch of rain in some spots. We will add more to that this weekend.”

Monahan doesn’t expect the weekend to be a total washout, but there will be wet weather at times, he said. The silver lining?

With temperatures well above average, it is all expected to fall as rain. Atlanta’s projected high Thursday is 66 degrees.

Despite the fog and a few earlier crashes, metro Atlanta interstates are moving well at 6 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. There are no major delays.

“Foggy, but smooth,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said.
