The USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier has been in the news recently over the uncertainty of its location and destination.
President Donald Trump stated it was headed toward North Korea days ago, but its delayed arrival has caused some speculation.

While the whereabouts of the airship might be hazy, the origin of the machine’s name is absolute.
It’s named after Carl Vinson, a Georgia congressman, for his contributions to the U.S. Navy. Here are five things to know about him:
1. The USS Carl Vinson was named after him in 1980.
The accolade is rarely given to someone while they are living. Vinson attended the ship’s launching at age 96.
2. He graduated from two Georgia institutions.
Born in 1883 in Baldwin County, Georgia, Vinson attended Georgia Military College and earned his law degree from Mercer University.
3. His nickname is “The Father of the Two-Ocean Navy.”
He helped enact the Two-Ocean Navy Act, also known as the Vinson-Walsh Act, which increased the U.S. Navy by 70 percent.

4. He’s the longest-serving member of the United States House of Representatives from Georgia.
He was in office from 1914 until 1965, serving the 10th district for 19 years and the 6th district for 32.
5. His grandnephew was a Georgia senator.
Sam Nunn was elected in 1972, serving for 24 years. He is now the CEO and co-chairman of the Nuclear Threat Initiative, an organization dedicated to reducing global threats from weapons.
6. He received a Presidential Medal of Freedom with Special Distinction.
In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson awarded him with the honor, the highest the president can give to a civilian.
7. There’s a Georgia street named after him.
