Q: How long has roadwork been in progress on 10th Street, and will it ever be finished? What exactly are they doing? It seems like it has been going on forever.

A: Much of the roadwork on 10th Street has been part of construction on two hotels and a streetscape project that began in March 2012, a spokeswoman for the Midtown Alliance told Q&A on the News in an email. The Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites (on the northeast corner of 10th and Williams Street) opened in January, and the Hyatt Midtown Atlanta (on the southwest corner of 10th and Juniper Street) is scheduled to open this summer. "Sections of the sidewalk at each location had to be closed for a period of time in order to install the new streetscape elements, which included new lights, trees and a refurbished sidewalk," she wrote. The Hyatt will feature a glass and metal staircase leading from the 10th Street sidewalk to the hotel, and a piece of public art will be placed at the corner of Juniper. "Both projects had 12-month construction schedules and the contractors have made every effort to minimize the impact on traffic flow along 10th Street," she wrote. One segment of the streetscape project on 10th Street — from Williams to Peachtree Street — "has essentially been completed" and includes ADA-compliant sidewalks, a flashing beacon in the mid-block crosswalk at the Midtown MARTA station, new paving and striping, and improved lighting and curbing. The second part — from Peachtree to Juniper — includes burying utilities, new sidewalks and possibly new paving. It is scheduled to be finished in July.
