Q: There are two golf tournaments in Georgia each year – the Masters and the Tour Championship — with prizes in the millions of dollars. Do players from out of state and foreign players pay state income tax on their winnings?
—Denny Zollweg, Marietta
A: Georgia taxes athletes and entertainers who perform in the state under state code 48-7-1(11)(A), a spokesman with the Georgia Department of Revenue told Q&A on the News in an email.
It states: “Every individual who is not otherwise a resident of this state for income tax purposes and who regularly and not casually or intermittently engages within this state, by himself or herself or by means of employees, agents, or partners, in employment, trade, business, professional, or other activity for financial gain or profit, including, but not limited to, the rental of real or personal property located within this state or for use within this state.”
Georgia taxes them at 6 percent.
