A Gwinnett County teenager was sentenced last week to serve 25 years in prison for his role in the 2014 killing of a taxi driver.
Cameron Lavorsey Hollins, now 18, was found guilty Friday of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and received the maximum allowable sentence, Gwinnett County Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Tracie Cason said. After a six-day trial and two full days of deliberations, a jury found Hollins not guilty of murder and “could not reach a decision” on a separate felony murder count, Cason said.
“The state decided not to pursue the felony murder charge on a retrial and sentenced him on the guilty counts,” Cason told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The charges stemmed from the Aug. 15, 2014 death of Norcross taxi driver Afolabi Odifa. Prosecutors believe that late that evening, Odifa, 36, left his home in Norcross and picked up passengers — Hollins and friend Adam Matthew Pfeifer — at Sugarloaf Mills mall in Lawrenceville.
Hollins and Pfeifer, 23 at the time, allegedly rode with Odifa to the Spring Lakes Apartments on Chase Commons Drive near Norcross. Once there, they reportedly robbed Odifa and shot him once in the head.
During previous hearings, police testified that Hollins told them Pfeifer did the shooting. Pfeifer has not gone to trial yet, Cason said Tuesday.
Hollins has remained in custody since his arrest on Aug. 28.
