Teen crashes car in senator’s yard in Alpharetta
A car that crashed and burned in an Alpharetta residential area gave a state senator and his family quite a scare.
The car, driven by 17-year-old James Robert Cobb II, careened into the yard of Brandon Beach about 3 a.m. Dec. 21 and caught on fire. Beach, a Republican state senator who represents North Fulton and Cherokee counties, said he and his family were jolted awake by a loud sound.
“My son looked out of his window and saw a car on fire and it was on its side in our yard,” the senator said.
Cobb’s 2002 Mercedes-Benz C320 was traveling eastbound on Mid Broadwell Road when it crossed the double yellow lines and left the roadway, according to a police report. The car struck a stone wall, came to rest in Beach’s yard and caught fire.
Cobb became trapped in the car and firefighters had to pull him out, Alpharetta police spokesman George Gordon said.
Cobb was taken to North Fulton Hospital to be treated for his injuries, but has since been released.
Part of a wall in Beach’s yard was damaged and the fire destroyed the car, Gordon said.
“We’re still investigating the accident, Gordon said. “We will determine if speed was a contributing factor and we will get toxicology results.”
He said the teen, who was injured in the wreck, could face multiple charges once the investigation is concluded.
Beach said Cobb’s life may have been saved by his seat belt.
“It was a Christmas miracle for him,” he said. “He did have his seat belt on, which I think was crucial for him.”
