A Henry County teen accused of shooting and killing his sister's boyfriend Tuesday has been released to his parents, officials said Wednesday.

Seventeen-year-old Dalton McCollough was killed Tuesday at his girlfriend’s home on Wyckliffe Drive in Locust Grove. Henry police spokesman Lt. Joey Smith said the younger brother of McCollough’s girlfriend shot him when the couple was engaged in an argument. Few details have been released, but Smith said Wednesday that detectives and prosecutors are in the process of determining if charges will be brought.

In the meantime, the alleged shooter has been “released into the custody of his guardians,” Smith said Wednesday.

“We cannot provide a date when this investigation will be completed,” Smith said, “and the initial incident report is not publicly available at this time.”

McCollough was a junior at Hampton High School. A crisis support team was at the school for students Wednesday morning, a Henry County schools spokesman said.
