A gym teacher at one of the nation's most prestigious prep schools alleges in a lawsuit that he was fired by his homosexual boss because he is straight.
Gregory Kenney taught gym at the Trinity School on Manhattan's Upper West Side for 16 years before he was let go in June 2012. In his lawsuit, the 50-year-old married teacher claims he was let go because his supervisor, whom he says is a lesbian, disapproved of his "traditional family status."
Kenney alleges that athletic director Pat Krieger was unsympathetic to his complaints about having to coach three sports, despite a contract that only required him to manage two teams at the school.
He contends Krieger “routinely favored other single, younger females without children and discriminated against [him] because of his gender, sexual orientation, ‘traditional family status,’ and age.'"
Kenney's attorney told the New York Post his client "felt ostracized because of his family" and had been complaining to Krieger that the extra coaching duties were interfering with his family life, forcing him to work nights and weekends.
The lawsuit goes on to state "“On at least one occasion Kenney was dissuaded from attending social events with his peers because he was a heterosexual, married male with children, who wouldn’t fit in with [Krieger’s] ‘culture.’
Kenny claims he's not alone in being discriminated against and says three other married coaches with children were let go.
The gym teacher was let go in 2012 over what he says were false allegations that he had illegally sublet his school provided apartment, and for allegedly leaving students unsupervised. Kenny claims those charges were simply made up by Krieger in an effort to have him fired.
He is seeking unspecified damages from the school, which has tuition rates of more than $40,000 per year and was founded more three hundred years ago.
