A Stockbridge man believed to be under the influence of drugs was shot by a Cobb County police officer Sunday after Taser attempts weren’t enough to subdue him, authorities said.
The incident happened at about 7:45 a.m. at the Masters Inn on Windy Hill Road near Marietta. Two Cobb officers, responding to a suspicious person call, made contact with 30-year-old Joshua Duvall inside a second-floor room.
Duvall “exited the room onto the balcony and physically began attacking the officers,” Cobb County police spokeswoman Officer Alicia Chilton said. The officers attempted to deploy their Tasers but “they were ineffective,” Chilton said.
“At a point where the suspect began to physically overpower the officers, and while charging at one of them, an officer fired a shot, striking the suspect in the abdomen,” Chilton said.
Duvall was transported to Kennestone Hospital, Chilton said, and was in stable condition. He has been charged with felony obstruction, misdemeanor obstruction and terrorist threats, Chilton said.
One officer involved in the incident was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Sunday's incident was the second shooting involving Cobb County officers in less than a week.
Shortly after midnight on May 11, Cobb authorities responded to a loud music complaint at the Hillcrest Plaza Mobile Home Park off Atlanta Road. When officers spoke to a man on one of the lots, he went inside the trailer, got a gun and threatened to shoot officers, Chilton said at the time.
“When officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect to get him out of the home, he began to shoot at them,” Chilton said. “Officers returned fire, and the suspect was struck.”
The man, 37-year-old Brian Thomas Ohlmann, 37, was initially reported to be in critical condition. On Monday morning, Chilton said Ohlmann — has been charged with five counts of aggravated assault against an officer and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime — remained at WellStar Kennestone Hospital and was in stable condition.
