The man suspected of raping and killing a woman more than 24 years ago is back in Cobb County to answer the charges.
George Frederick Gengarelly, 63, was arrested last month at his Hernando, Fla., home for allegedly shooting Yvonne Weems to death in 1991, according to police.
Weems, 37, of Atlanta, was found dead and only partially clothed on Jan. 12, 1991, off Lake Acworth Drive in Acworth. Investigators believe Weems had been sexually assaulted before she was killed.
The woman’s death remained a cold case until DNA recently linked Gengarelly to the crime, Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb police previously said. Police issued an arrest warrant for Gengarelly, charging him with murder, aggravated assault, aggravated sodomy, rape and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Gengarelly was booked into the Citrus County jail before being extradited to Cobb, jail records showed. He was booked Sunday morning into the Cobb jail, where he was being held without bond Tuesday afternoon.
Address records showed that Gengarelly lived in Bartow County at the time of Weems’ death. His Adairsville address was about 25 miles north of the recreation area where the woman’s body was found.
From Georgia, Gengarelly moved to Florida, but he wasn’t always a free man, records showed.
In 1995, Gengarelly was charged with second-degree murder in Volusia County, and in 1998, he was sentenced to 15 years prison, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. On Dec. 16, 2009, Gengarelly was released from a Florida prison, records showed. Two years later, he was married.
No information was released on a possible motive in the death of Weems.
