Fire officials in Smyrna are trying to determine what sparked a predawn blaze that heavily damaged a small Cobb County church.

Firefighters at 6 a.m. were still pouring water on hot spots at the Holy Sabbath Ministries International on Cooper Lake Road in Smyrna.

Smyrna fire Lt. Dustin Davey told Channel 2 Action News that flames were shooting from the roof of the church when firefighters arrived around 2:45 a.m.

A passerby spotted the flames and called 911, according to Davey.

“It doesn’t appear that there was anybody in the church at the time,” Davey said. “We have no reports of injuries.”

The roof of the church collapsed before firefighters could knock down the flames.

The ministry was founded in 1999, according to the church's website.
