Sandy Springs police are looking for the driver of a white Dodge Challenger who caused an officer to crash his cruiser Sunday night in a pursuit on Ga. 400.
The officer was trying to stop the speeding car about 9:30 p.m. when he lost control of his cruiser and crashed in the southbound lanes near the I-285 interchange, police said. He was severely injured and has since been released from a hospital.
All southbound lanes of Ga. 400 were closed until midnight Sunday while police investigated.
Sandy Springs police said the officer crashed when the speeding driver cut across all lanes of the highway near the entrance to I-285. Investigators were still working to identify the driver of the Dodge, department spokesman Sgt. Samuel Worsham said Monday.
The vehicle was described as an older model Challenger with California tags. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash.
On Monday morning, a Clayton County officer was killed in a head-on crash on Tara Boulevard. Officer Armondo Mendoza, 22, was on his way to an off-duty job when he was hit by a silver sedan, authorities said.
Mendoza was in critical condition when he was rushed to a hospital, where he later died. The GSP is also investigating that wreck, the agency said.
