For best sports writer, a reason to be grateful

Today, I’m thankful that one of the biggest benefits of my learning to read was that Furman Bisher was already the premier sportswriter of my generation.

I’m thankful for the home delivery of newspapers and being able to turn first to Bisher’s column.

I’m thankful Bisher never disappointed me with scandal or disparagement.

I’m thankful Bisher wrote mostly about the only three sports I care about and gave me information and insight I would have never gotten otherwise.

I’m thankful that when Bisher wrote about my favorite golf tournament of all time, he did it with such imagery that you just knew you were there.

I’m thankful Bisher’s heroes were the same as mine (Vince Lombardi, Hank Aaron, Jack Nicklaus and Bobby Jones).

I’m thankful Bisher could endure tremendous personal grief — and show us how it’s done with dignity and grace.

I’m thankful for the interview he gave me for a profile piece.

The way he treated me (and the hours of stories) made that afternoon one of the genuine highlights of my life.

And I’m thankful that Bisher has made each of my Thanksgivings since learning to read an extra-special holiday.

We soon must oust all congressional leaders

It is time for American voters to hold our elected “representatives” accountable for their actions.

Since the last congressional election, we have endured the most dysfunctional and unproductive Congress in the history of the United States. This Congress has consistently chosen party ideology over the needs of the nation and the wishes of their constituents.

The supercommittee budget failure will have dire economic consequences for us all. Such a failure must also have consequences for the members of the committee and congressional leaders.

If party politics again trump national interests, we voters must act across party lines to ensure that members of the committee and leaders of the House and Senate (of both parties) are all voted out of office.
