Active-duty military
need support, prayers
As we prepare to gather with family and friends over the upcoming holiday season, we hope that everyone will pause to remember the sacrifices of America’s veterans, and the thousands of active-duty military personnel serving around the globe.
Those of us who have served understand the loneliness and sacrifice that come with being away from our loved ones, especially during these important family times.
Today’s men and women in the military endure not only difficult assignments in dangerous places, but also multiple deployments — making each separation from family more difficult than the one before.
As you bow your head to say grace, say a prayer for the safe return of our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen who are safeguarding our nation. Remember our military families who, on a daily basis, pay the price of deployment separation.

Lugar would make
good Cabinet choice
President Obama could replicate some of the spirit of President Lincoln’s “team of rivals” by nominating outgoing Sen. Richard Lugar as secretary of state.
President Obama would be getting an individual in this key position who is not only eminently qualified, with years of foreign policy experience, but who is also level-headed and highly respected. The approval process would be non- contentious, and a giant step in manifesting bipartisanship.

Obama won; now let’s
get on with our lives
I am tired of hearing bellyaching about the presidential election.
While I understand people’s disappointment at the outcome, lamenting about the results is an exercise in futility. The country as some knew it is changing — but it is not in decline. Disagreeing with the president’s policies and voting against him is a right if you so choose to exercise it. However, this talk about secession or expatriation is just juvenile.
Betting against the future of this country has been a losing proposition for more than 200 years and will continue to be a losing bet during the next four as well. We are so privileged to live in the greatest country the world has ever seen, and it is time that we start acting like it.

Rice defenders need
to retool arguments
Having read articles regarding House female Democrats’ reaction to criticism of Ambassador Rice as racist and sexist, I found myself both embarrassed and offended.
As a woman who broke into the business world in the 1970s, I went through my share of experiences dealing with prejudiced people. Let me say that the situation Rice finds herself in does not fall into this category. These women would be well-served to address the facts in this case to show they are unfounded — and leave the name-calling to elementary school children. By resorting to name-calling, it leaves no doubt in my mind that they are unable to defend her actions. Shame on them. Their constituents deserve better.
