ZIMMERMAN CASE

High legal costs can’t compare to child’s life

This is in response to “Defendant must face enormous legal bills” (Readers write, Opinion, July 22), about the cost to the defendant in the Martin-Zimmerman trial.

In my 83 years, I have never heard anyone concerned about the cost of legal fees for the defendant. Let’s think about the cost of the life of a human being. Imagine what the cost to the victim’s family is.

A family has lost a son. Money can be replaced, but a child’s life cannot. Imagine the pain and ultimate price of losing a loved one.

A royal birth trumps non-stop trial coverage

Only when the future king of England was born did the news media drop its obsessive coverage of George Zimmerman — and it did that cold turkey.

Long live the future king.

COMMENTARY

Cartoonist on target, balances other views

Regarding the recent letter about Mike Luckovich being “outrageously out of touch” (“Cartoon just throws more gas on the fire,” Readers write, Opinion, July 24), Mike hits the target nearly every time he throws.

Sure, it’s sometimes “outrageous”, but hello: It’s a cartoon. Cartoons by definition are meant to have some humorous content, yes? Isn’t it funny how right-leaning folks blast one Mike (Luckovich) for being over the top and just wrong, but you never see anyone — including the liberal left — bashing or complaining about the other Mike (Ramirez)? The latter almost always uses racial stereotypes, overstates what he and the right see as evil government policy, and quite often is mean-spirited and not funny. I still look at them both.

If the AJC is going to be balanced, then balanced it is. I would prefer that to having two left-leaning political cartoons or two right-tilting cartoons any day.

SECOND AMENDMENT

Give citizens defense against armed felons

Regarding “End concealed carry; display guns openly” (Readers write, Opinion, July 23), I’ll open carry — which I do a lot anyway — all the time when criminals start to open carry as well.

The most aggravating part of this letter against concealed carry is the apparent distrust of lawful citizens who, in the state of Georgia, pass a very comprehensive background check and can legally carry concealed firearms. The letter seems to give criminals a free pass. Why is that?

It is the world we live in, and while it’s unfortunate, criminals carry illegal firearms and hide them. The only feasible defense is to have lawful citizens legally possess firearms, and carry them how they please where the practice is allowed by law.

Criminals don’t obey the law. We do. Don’t make it harder on us, please.
