College standards are slipping away
I fully agree with Mr. Diguette (“Welcome to college, or maybe grade 12 ½,” Opinion, Aug. 4). Having taught as an adjunct professor at the university level, I too feel we are dumbing down the college curriculum. We believe everyone is entitled to a college education regardless of their academic qualifications. Even post-graduate programs are not immune. Georgia’s state and private universities tout executive MBAs that have GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) waivers. The only requirement for admission is the ability to pay the tuition. College is now the new high school.

How to stop influx of illegal immigrants
Few Americans would send their children, unescorted, to live in another country to be raised by who knows whom or what. We wouldn’t do it to the children, and we would not place the responsibility on others. We don’t know what would make parents from a few South American countries to, in concert, send their children to live here. Some likely come from dire circumstances, while others very likely don’t come from dire circumstances.
Now, we are feeding and housing the children. Do we have a moral obligation to do so? We won’t be compensated for doing so. If we don’t send the children back, more will come – period. Let’s compassionately send them and their parents home. What can we do to make their countries better? We have no obligation to do anything. However, we could stop the war on drugs, thereby helping them, their country and our country.

These vets happy with Atlanta VA
My wife and I have been patients of the Atlanta VA for 14 years. We would like to say some positive things about the care we have received. We have both had surgery and are being treated for continuing medical problems. The staff professionals have provided very good care for us over the years. We have had no more problems than we had with outside providers. We had the same struggles dealing with insurance providers and physicians when we were patients outside the VA.
We have learned to be persistent and very specific in discussing medical issues with providers. The only problems we have had are the result of insufficient professional personnel in some areas. This problem is no worse than trying to find an outside provider who will take a specific insurance plan and is willing to take on new patients. We are happy patients of the Atlanta VA and would like to emphasize that not all veterans are unhappy with their care. We are retired and living on a fixed income and depend on the VA for our medical needs.
