A commercially-made hive was stolen Tuesday in Oklahoma, and the owner is worried about the welfare of the bees.

Dominic Donajkowski, the hive’s owner, worries that the thief may not handle the bees correctly.

Jenks police began investigating the missing hive as a theft. The hive, which was on city property, was no longer in a tree stump where it had originally been placed.

The owner put the hive there as a new home in case the bees in a nearby tree were displaced by a road widening project that breaks ground later in 2016.

Police checked with Jenks Animal Control, which said it did not remove the hive.

The hive’s value is estimated at $300, but the owner said he worries because he does not know who is handling the bees.
