State investigators are trying to determine what caused a fire that killed a 71-year-old man and his 77-year-old wife Sunday morning in Rabun County.

The fire that claimed the lives of Joseph and Phyllis Kneer started about 7 a.m. in the 3000 block of Blue Ridge Gap, said Glenn Allen, the spokesman for the Georgia insurance commissioner’s office.

“Their bodies were discovered in the rubble by firefighters and taken to a GBI crime laboratory for an autopsy and identification,” Allen said.

Investigators suspect the fire started in the kitchen area of the wood frame home.

No other details were released.
