Authorities in Douglas County have identified a Mableton man as the suspect in an August shooting that originated on I-20.
The victim told police he was traveling west on the interstate Aug. 31 when a silver pickup truck pulled behind him and flashed its bright lights. The victim exited onto Lee Road and the pickup truck followed, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
“Without warning, an occupant of the silver truck shouted obscenities at the victim and then fired rounds into the victim’s vehicle striking him twice,” the agency said in a news release. “The suspect truck then fled onto I-20 East.”
On Oct. 2, investigators arrested 25-year-old Turan Rogers Melton while executing a search warrant at his Mableton home.
Melton was identified after a thorough investigation, the sheriff’s office said. He is facing charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery and criminal attempt to commit murder stemming from the August incident.
The sheriff’s office also said he is a suspect in “several other shootings around the metro Atlanta area,” although it did not offer any other details Monday.
In 2019, Melton was one of three men arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting at a Mableton-area home. No one was reported injured, but two children were asleep inside the home on Ivey Terrace Drive when someone opened fire Jan. 23.
Melton was facing aggravated assault charges in that incident, AJC.com previously reported. He was granted a $15,000 bond and eventually released from custody.
Bond was denied last Monday on the most recent charges, and Melton is being held in the Douglas County Jail, according to authorities.
