A 17-year-old boy swimming with friends in Lake Lanier drowned Saturday afternoon.

Rescue workers pulled Quavante Combs from the lake, but by the time they reached him, he already had been under water nearly 20 minutes, authorities said.

The teenagers were swimming across a cove near Burton Mill Park in the southern part of Hall County, according to Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell.

Combs became tired and went under water.

Rescue crews were delayed in getting to the lake because of some confusion on where the teens actually were, Kimbrell said. The first 9-11 caller said the group was at Vann Pugh Park.

Once dispatchers got more information, they were able to send rescue crews to Burton Mill Park, Kimbrell said.

By that time, 17 minutes had passed, Kimbrell said. Rescue crews found Combs in the water about three minutes after that, he said.
