A train struck and killed a woman Thursday morning near the Boulevard neighborhood in Athens, authorities said.

The woman was walking on train tracks just east of the Wynburne Avenue crossing shortly before 8 a.m., Athens-Clarke County Police said in a news release. The train’s engineer blew the whistle for her to get out of the way. However, the woman either did not hear the whistle or ignored it, police said.

Police will investigate to try to determine whether the incident was an accident, or if it was intentional on her part.

The victim’s identity has not been released. Police said she had an Athens address.
