A woman who was killed when she was struck by a train Thursday in Athens was homeless, Athens-Clarke County police said.

Brandi Sue Darling, 31, was hit by a CSX train about 8 a.m. as she walked eastbound on the tracks between Wynburn Avenue and Barber Street, police said.

The train conductor, James Cannady of Abbeville, S.C., blew the horn as a warning, but Darling did not leave the tracks. The conductor applied the emergency brake, but could not stop the train in time. Darling was hit and died at the scene, police said.

The investigation continues.
