A College Park woman has been cited for a wreck that killed her 16-year-old son and a Gwinnett County father, police said Friday.
Tamara Matthews, 36, faces two counts of homicide by vehicle in the second degree and failure to maintain lane in the Nov. 5 wreck, according to Cpl. Kay Lester with Fulton County police. The charges are misdemeanors, police said.
Matthews allegedly veered into oncoming traffic on Flat Shoals Road in south Fulton County, near the intersection with Harper Valley Drive, causing the wreck, which sent eight people to the hospital, police said. Matthews' son, Joshua Jenkins, died at the scene of the wreck.
Matthews' van struck a van containing the Walker family of Duluth, causing the family's van to flip and land on its roof, police said.
Glen Walker, 35, who was driving the van, died from injuries Nov. 22. His wife, Sandra Walker, sustained serious injuries, but was expected to be released from the hospital Friday, according to the family's blog. The couple's two children were not seriously injured.
The funeral for Glen Walker will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Norcross First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Peachtree Memorial Park.
Tamara Matthews, who was also injured in the wreck, has a court date scheduled for February 1 at 1 p.m. at the South Fulton Magistrate Court in College Park, Lester said. The investigation is still ongoing and the charges may be increased or additional charges may be filed, she said.
