Wipes and grease blamed for 11,000-gallon Gwinnett sewage spill

Sept 8, 2016

Wipes, grease and other debris were to blame for a Wednesday morning spill that sent more than 11,000 gallons of sewage into a Gwinnett County creek, officials said.

The sewage spill was reported around 10:40 a.m. at a manhole on Everson Road in Snellville, not far from Ga. 124, according to the Gwinnett Department of Water Resources. It took nearly five hours to bring the spill under control.

"The main cause was determined to be debris, including wipes, paper and other products," officials said in a news release. "Grease was also present."

Workers raked the area and spread lime, and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified.

Wednesday's spill was the second this week in Gwinnett. A damaged pipe spilled 1,500 gallons of sewage into a Chattahoochee River tributary on Monday.

Gwinnett, however, generally has the fewest spills annually in the core metro Atlanta region, according to EPD records.
