Will rain affect Atlanta’s July 4th festivities (and fireworks)?

July 4, 2015

Good news, patriots — it looks like weather may not completely wipe out your Independence Day plans.

Saturday started off gloomy and wet — a few start delays at the AJC-Peachtree Road Race included — but the morning's "widespread rain" is expected to transition into scattered showers by afternoon, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

“Things are going to get better as the day goes on,” Monahan said.

A flash flood watch is in effect through Sunday night for most of north Georgia, and there is a 70 percent chance of rain throughout Saturday. But, according to Monahan, showers will be “mainly just isolated.”

Most, if not all, metro Atlanta fireworks shows should be a go for Saturday evening, Monahan said.

Morning rain did cause the city of Marietta to cancel its 10 a.m. Fourth of July parade, but the city’s all-day festival and fireworks are expected to proceed as scheduled.

Atlanta Soccerfest also cancelled its "Brookhaven BBQ Bash," which was scheduled for all day Saturday at Brookhaven Park. Sunday's festivities — including a screening of the U.S. women's team's appearance in the World Cup final — are still on, the group's website said.

Sunday will bring a 60 percent chance of rain and a high of 83 degrees. Highs are expected to hit 90 by Wednesday.
