Commemorate 9/11 elsewhere around metro Atlanta

Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and Gwinnett County will offer residents several ways to commemorate the somber occasion — whether it be with a simple tribute or a symphony.

Fallen Heroes Memorial

The Gwinnett County fire department will hold a 9/11 rememberance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the Fallen Heroes Memorial. The memorial is located at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center, 75 Langley Drive in Lawrenceville.

Members of the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners and honor guard units from Gwinnett County fire, police and sheriff's departments, as well as the Lawrenceville Police Department, will take part in the event.

'Remembrance' in Suwanee

At 3 p.m. Sunday, the city of Suwanee will hold an event near its "Remembrance" exhibit, a piece of twisted metal reclaimed from the World Trade Center and donated to the city in 2013.

"Created by Statesboro artist Marc Moulton, the display also includes a 9/11 historical timeline with stainless steel letters and numbers embedded into a cement pad as well as an inverted conical sculpture, with the lower Manhattan cityscape cut into it," city officials said.

The event will feature local police, fire and honor guard members. Suwanee Mayor Jimmy Burnette, State Representative Brooks Coleman and Suwanee Chief of Police Mike Jones will speak.

The exhibit is on the east side of Town Center Park, which is at the corner of Buford Highway and Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road.

'America' with the Gwinnett symphony

At 2 p.m. Sunday, the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will kick off its 20th anniversary season with "America: A Tribute to the Heroes of 9/11." The concert and gala will be held at the Infinite Energy Center, 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.

Concert tickets are $15, and tickets to both the concert and gala are $50. Proceeds benefit Care for Cops, the Georgia Fallen Firefighters Foundation and Operation Homefront.

A patriotic run

At 2 p.m. Sunday, the "Patriot Run 5K" will be held at Lawrenceville's Tribble Mill Park. Proceeds benefit the Gwinnett Police Foundation, which provides assistance to law enforcement officers and their families in times of need.

Registration is $25 for the 5K, $32 for the 10K and $15 for the fun run. Click here for more information.

City of Winder

Just outside Gwinnett, the city of Winder will hold a memorial service at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The mayor and council, as well as the city's fire and police departments, will participate.

The 30-minute service will be held at the Winder Fire Department, 90 North Broad St.
