Detectives are still searching for a Waffle House shooter who may have been wounded after he fired at an off-duty DeKalb County police officer inside the crowded restaurant early Sunday morning.

The man entered the restaurant on Covington Highway near I-285 and Decatur around 2 a.m. carrying a gun and opened fire after seeing the off-duty uniformed officer, according to Channel 2 Action News. The officer returned fire and is believed to have wounded the man who ran from the restaurant, leaving a trail of blood stains on the restaurant wall.

Police brought in a helicopter and search dogs, but the suspect got away and is still on the loose.

No one else inside the restaurant was injured.

“We don’t know the extent of his injuries but believe he may have been hit by return gunfire by the officer,” DeKalb Police Chief Cedric Alexander told Channel 2.

Police don’t know why the man opened fire.

The Waffle House closed briefly after the shooting, but has reopened.
