The University System of Georgia raised more than $1 million for student scholarships this year, system officials announced Monday.

More than 70 students are receiving scholarship money from the university system's foundation, officials said.

The State Board of Regents planned to increase scholarship fund-raising this year in part because of anticipated changes to the popular lottery-funded, merit-based HOPE scholarship. The regents asked individual campuses to step up fund-raising as well.
