A few metro Atlanta music teachers were among the nearly 200 quarter-finalists for the Grammys' Music Educator Award announced Wednesday.
And two of them teach at schools in Marietta.
Scott Brown of Dickerson Middle School and Gary Gribble of Pope High School are among the eight music teachers from Georgia in a field of 197 across the country who are up for the Grammy award.
They are eligible to move on to the semifinal round of the award, which was started five years ago by the Grammy Museum and The Recording Academy to "bring attention to the excellent and impactful work being done by thousands of music teachers," the Grammys said.
Anyone can nominate a full-time teacher at a private or public school, even themselves.
The winner will receive $10,000 and a flight to New York for the 60th Grammy Awards along with its accompanying week of events, according to a news release.
The nine other finalists will receive $1,000 and their schools will receive a grant in the same amount. The 15 semifinalists and their schools will get $500 — those will be announced in September.
This year there were 2,300 nominations from all 50 states.
The metro Atlanta quarter-finalists are two teachers from Cobb County schools in Marietta and one from a private Christian school in West Paces.
Below are the eight Georgia winners:
- Scott Brown, Dickerson Middle School in Marietta
- Gary Gribble, Pope High School in Marietta
- Jack Jean, Whitewater High School in Fayetteville
- Mark Laughlin, Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus
- Amy Reber, Lake Oconee Academy in Greensboro
