Cherokee County this week is ending a school year turned topsy-turvy by the COVID-19 pandemic.

School buildings have been closed since March 16; digital learning has taken place since then. With Gov. Brian Kemp’s order closing all Georgia schools through the end of the academic year, Cherokee County School District officials decided to end the year early, this Friday.

Principals were to communicate with families about picking up students’ belongings, yearbooks and photos.

Teachers will work with students who need more time and help to succeed through May 22, officials said. Elementary, middle school and high school report cards will be mailed after that date. Staff also is developing resources for optional continued learning over the summer break.

School nutrition staff has been distributing bags of food to students in need every Monday; each bag contains a week of breakfasts and lunches for a child. The program goes through Monday, May 18, with no distribution May 25 and meals resuming June 1. Information: http://bit.ly/CCSDserves
