The Paulding Northwest Atlanta Airport reopened to flights Friday morning, one week after the airfield west of Dallas took a direct hit from the 165 mph winds of an EF-3 tornado.
Last Friday night's tornado destroyed a large hangar, and left 18 of the 23 planes at the airport a total loss, according to airport manager Blake Swafford.
The airport's new terminal building sustained roof and window damage from the storm, which hit around 8:30 p.m.
Damage at the airport was estimated at $5 million, including a Cessna Citation jet worth $1.2 million.
The general and business aviation airport is located 30 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
Paulding officials said 14 homes in the county were destroyed by the March 2 twister. Another 57 homes had moderate damage, and 92 houses had minor damage.
The tornado also damaged Poole Elementary School near the airport, taking off part of the roof and overturning several portable classroom trailers.
A charity motorcycle ride will be held on March 17 to benefit the school. The ride will begin at the Hooters restaurant in Hiram and will end at The Cove Bar and Grill in Dallas.
