City sets July 4 fireworks but cancels parade, run
Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there will be neither a July 4th Spectacular Parade and Festival nor a Freedom Run on Independence Day in Woodstock – but there will be a fireworks show, the city announced.
“We consulted with elected officials, state officials and staff and determined that there is no good way to stage Woodstock’s annual parade and festival this year with current restrictions (on crowds) in effect,” Woodstock City Manager Jeff Moon said.
However, he added, “we are proceeding with the fireworks show as regularly scheduled, given that the layout of the area that is utilized for viewing the show easily allows for social distancing.”
Fireworks will take place at dusk at Woodstock Square, near Ga. 92 and Molly Lane; traffic details will be posted to the city’s social media channels. The Freedom Run has been postponed to this fall, and a new date for the event will be announced in the near future, officials said. Information: https://bit.ly/2AhWNYT

School board honors graduates
The Henry County Board of Education voted at its May 11 regular business meeting to approve a resolution proclaiming May 22 as Henry County Schools Class of 2020 Day. That is the date originally scheduled to be graduation day for more than 3,000 seniors at the county’s ten high schools, before all school buildings were closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Actual graduation ceremonies have been rescheduled for late June, or possibly late July if health officials recommend further delay. Board members stated that they wanted to create “a unique way to ensure that this special senior class is celebrated by everyone in the county,” according to a statement from the district. A resolution to recognize the Class of 2020 was unanimously adopted with language noting the special circumstances of this year that have greatly affected the current senior class.
The district will also host a virtual celebration on this date.
