Q: Do you know when construction on the East Roswell library is set to begin?

—J. Woolwine, Roswell

A: Construction of the East Roswell library and seven other new branch libraries (Alpharetta, Milton, Northwest Atlanta, Palmetto, Stewart-Lakewood, Southeast Atlanta and Wolf Creek) is expected to begin in 2012. Openings are expected in 2013, according to the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. It has selected a program management team to coordinate and oversee the first phase of its $167 million facility master plan, which also includes two expanded libraries (Auburn Avenue Research Library and the South Fulton Library). Architects and engineers are expected to be selected sometime this year, according to library officials.

Q: In the Feb. 17 Q&A on the News, it mentioned the donation of kidneys (the Wake Forest baseball coach had donated a kidney to a player). If a person has donated a kidney, does that person become moved up on any list for a kidney in the future from someone else?

—Dan Scarborough, Marietta

A: Yes. If a person has been a donor and develops kidney failure, that tremendous gift is acknowledged and that person does go to the top of the deceased donor list, Dr. Bryan Becker, immediate past president of the National Kidney Foundation, told Q&A on the News. "We have a small number of cases in the United States when donors have unfortunately developed kidney failure some time after donation and this process has worked for them," he wrote in an e-mail.
