Q: Can you provide the disposition of the $77 million lottery prize sold in West Georgia but not claimed? It seems like that could be dispersed to Hope scholarship winners and offset cuts made earlier this year.
—Tom Hartzell, Alpharetta
A: Powerball jackpot prizes are funded proportionately by all 44 Powerball jurisdictions, based on each jurisdiction's sales for the particular drawing, Georgia Lottery Corp. spokeswoman Tandi Reddick told Q&A on the News in an email. "Powerball jackpot prize funds that are not claimed within the specified time are returned to each jurisdiction," she said. The portion of the $77 million prize that came from Georgia sales was $1.07 million. In Georgia, unclaimed prize funds are returned to the prize pool to be used for future prizes and special prize promotions. Of this money, $200,000 is transferred annually to the Georgia Department of Human Resources for education and treatment programs for problem gambling.
Q: How can I find out the verdict regarding accusations that Tim Duncan slammed a student against a wall in September? The AJC ran the original article and I know he had a court date on Jan. 4.
—Susan Montague, Johns Creek
A: Duncan's court date has been reset for 2 p.m. Jan. 26, according to a spokesman with the North Magistrate Court of Fulton County. Duncan, a principal at Chattahoochee High School since 2004, was charged with simple battery after allegedly slamming a 13-year-old middle school student against a wall at the high school during a non-school function on Sept. 25.
