Q: During the Super Bowl, they showed a number of past Super Bowl rings won by various teams. Who designs the rings, what is an approximate cost per ring, and who pays for them? Also, who receives the rings?
-- Bob Alexander, Duluth
A: Companies bid for the right to design and make the rings, but Jostens has made 29 of 45 Super Bowl rings and Balfour has made nine, according to ESPN.com. The NFL stipulates that one side of the ring must include the Super Bowl logo. The NFL pays for 150 rings for the winning team and 150 rings for the losing team. The winning team gets about $5,000 a ring, or about $750,000 total, with the club picking up the rest of the cost. The losing team receives about half that to spend on its rings. Team owners decide who receives the rings and when they are presented. Players, coaches, front office staff and full-time employees are the usual recipients.
Q: Why doesn't Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport have a cellphone parking lot?
-- Caroline Russu, Snellville
A: Free cellphone lots at Hartsfield-Jackson are under consideration, airport spokesman John Kennedy told Q&A on the News in an email. Drivers picking up passengers can park in two hourly decks adjoining the terminal at $2 per hour, with the first 15 minutes free, he said. Kennedy said people picking up passengers often park in those lots and come inside to wait.
