Q: What is the protocol on who pays for what in a “royal wedding?” Are cost estimates released?

— Martha Hunt, Hoschton

A: Kate Middleton's millionaire parents are making a "six-figure contribution" to the wedding, Vanity Fair reported. Some publications have reported that their contribution covers some of the costs for items such as Middleton's much-anticipated dress. With England's economic climate, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles and the Middletons are footing the cost for the wedding service, reception and honeymoon, with British taxpayers expected to cover security and cleanup, according to a variety of publications. Sums for past royal weddings have not been disclosed. Estimates for Friday's wedding have started at $32 million.

Q: With a renewed concern about rising gas prices and miles per gallon, what is the status of synchronizing traffic lights in Atlanta and surrounding areas to allow traffic to flow more smoothly?

— John B. Williams, Decatur

A: The Georgia Department of Transportation has an active program to synchronize traffic signalization along state routes in the metro area, spokeswoman Jill Goldberg told Q&A on the News in an e-mail. GDOT recently was recognized nationally for its work in this area, she said. In addition, Atlanta has begun an initiative to coordinate other roads in the city.
