Suwanee police chief named state’s best at annual conference

Suwanee Police Chief Mike Jones (third from left) was named outstanding chief of the year by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.

Suwanee’s police chief of nearly 20 years has been named the best in Georgia.

Chief Mike Jones was named Outstanding Chief of the Year by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police at its annual training conference in Savannah. He received the honor Tuesday.

Jones joined the Suwanee Police Department in 1999, when he was named chief. He had previously worked for the Rome Police Department for 24 years.

Under Jones’ leadership, the Suwanee Police Department has achieved industry standards and received awards recognizing its performance. The department was one of 56 Georgia law enforcement agencies to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. It received state certification in 1999 and was re-certified in 2004, 2009, 2013 and 2016. The department was also awarded the Phyllis Goodwin Agency of the Year by the Georgia chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates.

Jones has been active in the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, previously serving as president from 2008 to 2009 and serving on multiple committees. He is on the boards of Reinhardt College Police Academy and Gwinnett Technical College, and has graduated from the FBI National Academy and Georgia Command College.
