A man wanted in a Saturday night killing in Gainesville was arrested at a Douglasville hotel by SWAT officers Sunday morning.
Valentin Garcia, 39, shot and killed Santamaria Avelar, 26, during an 11 p.m. fight on Patterson Drive in Gainesville, Hall County Col. Jeff Strickland told WSB-TV. Investigators tracked Garcia to the Best Western off I-20 in Douglasville, where he was holed up in a room and refusing to cooperate, Strickland told the station.
Garcia surrendered about 7:30 a.m. after the Douglas County SWAT team responded to the scene, and he was taken to the Hall County Jail, according to WSB-TV.
The fight began at a large party. Strickland told the Gainesville Times that the killing does not appear to be gang-related.
