The Henry County Board of Commissioners voted at its April 7 regular meeting to table a proposal for streetlights along Jonesboro Road from I-75 to the Clayton County line.

County staff reached out to Georgia Power and received a preliminary design estimate of about $8,000 per month for approximately 140 area lights (280-watt LED lights) along that corridor. The costs would be paid monthly out of the county Department of Transportation’s budget, according to a staff report. Commissioner Dee Clemmons, who suggested the project for her district, said it was a public safety issue because of the number of accidents on that stretch of road.

But the proposal stalled because commissioners questioned whether the money should be spent right now amid uncertainty about the county’s economic future in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
