A busy road in Gwinnett County has reopened to traffic after almost two months since two sinkholes have been eliminated, officials said.

“Earlier this afternoon Venture Drive reopened to traffic,” the Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District said Saturday on Facebook.

Gwinnett County police confirmed Sunday that traffic is moving on the road.

The sinkholes opened June 21 on the road near Gwinnett Place Mall. This prompted county officials to close the road from Steve Reynolds Boulevard to Pleasant Hill Road, a block from the entrance to the mall.

The sinkholes were caused by the failure of a pipe leading to a stormwater detention pond controlled by two companies, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

Gwinnett County sued Venture Outlet Mall LLC and Best Friends Development, Inc. over the sinkholes. They were on Venture Outlet Mall’s property, and Best Friends Development owns the adjacent property, according to the lawsuit. Officials feared that the sinkholes could cause “catastrophic” damage to the county’s stormwater system.

The lawsuit was still active as of mid-July.
