Stone Mountain Park has canceled its popular fireworks shows that celebrate the Fourth of July because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision was made “due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the desire to maintain social distancing for the health and well-being of our employees and guests,” park spokeswoman Angela Walton told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The park had previously planned to hold the Stone Mountain Park Lasershow Spectacular from July 1 to 7, followed by a patriotic fireworks show each night. Thousands typically attend the park’s fireworks shows.

According to Stone Mountain's website, "limited attractions and natural areas of the park where adequate social distancing can be achieved are open." That means residents can still hike the park's trails and paths.

Many traditional Independence Day events and fireworks shows across DeKalb County are canceled or postponed this year, including in Decatur, Dunwoody, Avondale Estates and Chamblee.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
