The stolen gun a 14-year-old was playing with when he accidentally shot himself in the head Monday belonged to a neighbor, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Fredis Albayero-Rodriguez, 14, was playing with a 40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun at his friend’s house when it went off, Gwinnett police Cpl. Deon Washington said. Albayero-Rodriguez had surgery about 1 a.m. Tuesday and was in stable condition, Channel 2 reported.

The gun was reported stolen in Marietta on June 24, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported.

Wenifred Baker, the owner who reported the gun missing, didn’t immediately notice it had been taken from the glove box of her vehicle, where she normally stored it, according to a Marietta police report. Baker told police the gun went missing sometime between June 19 and June 23. But Marietta police don’t know exactly how or when the gun was stolen.

Baker lives less than two miles from where the incident happened, Channel 2 reported.

Gwinnett officers responded to the incident involving the teen just before 6 p.m. Monday in the 1400 block of Wingfoot Way. They learned that following the shooting, the teen’s 12-year-old friend, who was sitting near him, picked up the handgun, attempted to unload it and instead fired it a second time.

“No one was harmed by that shot,” Washington said.

Albayero-Rodriguez’s family told Channel 2 they didn’t know he had the gun or how he got it.

No charges are expected in what police are calling a “terrible accident,” Channel 2 reported.

There were at least two adults inside the home and four children ages 5 to 16. No one else was injured.
