A man accused of firing shots during a domestic dispute surrendered to Gwinnett County police -- and handed over a child -- Monday afternoon, several hours after a standoff began.

Neeka Gibbs, 29, was arrested and faces numerous charges in the incident, police said.

The police SWAT team was called to an apartment complex near Lawrenceville on Monday after a man allegedly fired shots during a domestic dispute.

The incident began just before 9:30 a.m. when officers were dispatched to a domestic dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend at an apartment in the 3100 block of Sweetwater Road, Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said.

"Officers learned that the boyfriend shot off a few rounds into the air from a gun as the girlfriend ran out of the apartment to seek help," Ritter said.

The girlfriend told police that her 1-year-old daughter was still in the apartment with Gibbs.

Ritter said officers attempted to negotiate with the boyfriend, who refused to come out of the apartment.

"The decision was made to call SWAT around 12:30 p.m. to assist with this incident," Ritter said.

Around 4:40 p.m, Gibbs surrendered, unarmed and carrying the child. He was taken into custody without incident, police said.

Gibbs is charged with obstruction of a 911 call, battery, third-degree cruelty to children, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, reckless conduct, and simple assault. More charges could be filed. Gibbs is in custody at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.
