The Army reservist gunned down by a fellow soldier at Fort Gillem spent 29 years in the military, his family told the AJC Saturday night.
Master Sgt. Pedro Mercado, 47, died from multiple gunshot wounds Thursday afternoon in building 941 at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Forest Park. The married father of three was a New York native who lived in Stockbridge.
The shooting suspect, who worked with Mercado, has not yet been identified. After the shooting, the alleged suspect surrendered to police in Lake City, just south of the base. The suspect has not yet been charged.
Mercado served as the noncommissioned officer-in-charge of the personnel section at the army medical department, the Army said in a statement Saturday. The unit provides centralized management of Army medical personnel nationwide.
The U.S. Army's criminal investigations command along with the FBI and local police agencies continue to investigate the shooting.
