Stone Mountain jazz maven's latest gig is a church hat show
We've heard from tons of you since Hazel and Al Whitfield and the club they founded, the Stone Mountain Jazz Society, were featured in the SB column a while back.
Gerald P. Selby, Kay Copilevitz, Maurice Almon, Calvin H. Neal, Wes Eisenberg and a bunch of people who didn't sign their names have e-mailed, eager to find out more about this music-loving group. Janet Stevenson wrote to say the Whitfields had inspired her to start a similar group and later reported that the newly formed Dunwoody Jazz Society had a great house concert featuring the music of Mace Hibbard. How great is that? (Info: www.dunwoodyjazzsociety.com).
Anyway, Hazel Whitfield is a fashion show producer as well as a jazz fan and singer. She and Cherise Peters plan a spring and summer hat show at 5 p.m. May 17 at Antioch AME Church, 765 S. Hairston Road, Stone Mountain. Refreshments will be served. Admission is $10, or $5 for children, and proceeds benefit the church's youth ministries. For information, call 404-299-3388.
