Instead of holding the three required public meetings in the Smyrna City Council Chambers, the tax hearings will be held in the Tax Office, second floor, Smyrna City Hall, 2800 King St.

That means no video recording of the meetings which takes place when meetings are held in the City Council Chambers.

These hearings will be held at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. July 17 and 10 a.m. July 24.

However, the City Council is expected to set the tax (millage) rate at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 in the City Council Chambers, Smyrna City Hall, 2800 King St.

The city’s millage rate is proposed to remain at 8.99 mills - the same rate since at least 2014.

Keeping this rate will yield an increase in property taxes by 5.31 percent.

Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate would be no more than 8.537 mills.

The proposed annual tax increase for a house with a fair market value of $300,000 is about $49.83; and the proposed annual tax increase for nonhomestead property with a fair market value of $475,000 is around $86.07.
