A Smyrna man has been indicted after an overnight standoff with police in July.

The charges for Jamil Vernon Williams were domestic battery and aggravated assault, according to Sept. 22 court records. His sentencing date was not mentioned.

Police received calls around 3 a.m. on July 1 about a domestic dispute at a familiar unit of the Brighton Way Apartment Homes on Parkway Avenue.

Officers had gone to that location "on numerous occasions," Smyrna police spokesman Louis Defense originally told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a woman who'd jumped from the second-floor balcony to escape Williams strangling her, police said. Her condition was and has not been released by police.

Williams barricaded himself inside the apartment and told officers to go away.

After hours of failed negotiations, officers used an unspecified chemical agent on Williams to get him outside.

He's been in jail since July 1 without bond.
