A Cobb County school district spokeswoman said a small fire Tuesday caused smoke but no damage at Walton High School, which recently underwent a $48 million taxpayer-funded revamp.

Cobb fire spokesman James Kapish said a call about the blaze atop a part of the school still under construction came in about 4:50 p.m. Firefighters got the flames under control about 5:20 p.m., he said.

There were no students or staff in that section of the school.

Kapish said the head of the construction project told authorities that some insulation had caught on fire. They don’t know how.

The 2,575-student East Cobb school had a ribbon-cutting ceremony in July 2017 with politicos and cake to celebrate the first phase of its overhaul, which began a couple of years earlier and was funded by the 2014 SPLOST, the special purpose local option sales tax.

The second phase, which involves constructing the new performing arts center and athletic building, is set to be completed in early 2019, the district has previously said.
