Slight chance of wintry mix forecast for Saturday

Forecasters are predicting unseasonably cold weather for the first weekend of March, and there’s even a chance of snow flurries Saturday in the mountains and a wintry mix of precipitation as far south as the southern suburbs of metro Atlanta.

But don’t bother rushing to the grocery store for milk and bread, as only a dusting of snow, at best, is forecast for metro Atlanta.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for north Georgia through 7 p.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service said accumulations of a half-inch are possible across extreme north Georgia on Saturday, with up to an inch at the higher elevations.

Friday afternoon, Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said Saturday will be mostly cloudy and cold across metro Atlanta, with a 30 percent chance of precipitation, which could possibly fall as flurries or a rain/snow mix. Lows early Saturday will be around 31 degrees, followed by afternoon highs only in the mid-40s.

Atlanta’s normal high for early March is 60 degrees, with the normal low in the low 40s.

A freeze warning is in effect until 9 a.m. Saturday. Most metro areas are affected, including Cobb, Clayton, Gwinnett, Henry, Fulton, and DeKalb.

Sunday should be sunny but cold, with highs in the mid-40s after morning lows in the upper 20s. Monday should be a little warmer, with lows again in the upper 20s and afternoon highs in the mid-50s under partly cloudy skies.
