The Sandy Springs Police Department has unveiled its newest member: a three-year-old Belgian malinois named The Rock.

The K-9 officer has already helped partner Officer Michael DeWald bring in three suspects, including one tracked after swimming in a pond following a felony shoplifting.

“I give the command to bark and as soon as they hear and see him, they surrender,” DeWald said.

The Rock, who went through more than 400 hours of training, is one of three K9 officers on the Sandy Springs force. The department has a second Belgian malinois for patrol and a bloodhound used for tracking.

The department’s first retiree was also a K9 officer, Amos, who left the force in September due to health problems.

Amos, also a Belgian and DeWald seized $3.7 million worth of various drugs and removed 50 handguns off city streets in their three-year partnership. Amos is spending retirement at home with DeWald.
